Visit-and-Volunteer Session at Karun Hijau Recycling and Urban Carbon Store

PENCINTA ALAM NOVEMBER 2020

GREEN LIVING ACTIVITY REPORT: VISIT AND VOLUNTEER SESSION AT KARUN HIJAU RECYCLING AND URBAN CARBON STORE

6 participants visited the Karun Hijau Recycling and Urban Carbon Store in Taman Seri Sentosa, Kuala Lumpur, on Oct 4 for a visit-and-volunteer session and repair workshop. Karun Hijau is a recycling centre that accepts unwanted items including electronic waste for repairs, upcycling, and finally, recycling, once an item reaches the end of its useful life.

Participants learned what items are accepted and not accepted for recycling by Alam Flora, and how even items consisting of different materials, such as Pringles potato chip cans, can be separated into its different elements for recycling (Tip: the can lid is HDPE plastic, the bottom is aluminium, and the can or tube is made of cardboard lined with aluminium foil).

Volunteers from Hara Makers and Reimagine Plastic then showed us how they upcycled plastic packaging into useful items such as pouches and tote bags by ironing 6 layers of plastic bags and sewing them into new items.

Repair heroes from KakiDIY conducted a repair workshop at the end of the session and showed us how to diagnose problems with electrical and electronic devices and carry out repairs on fans, clocks, lamps, a Bluetooth speaker, and an iron.

We are grateful to Karun Hijau, Hara Makers, Reimagine Plastic, KakiDIY, and KakiRepair for extending their hospitality to us and sharing their knowledge so generously. For your information, Karun Hijau also has door-to-door collection services for recyclables and unwanted items such as furniture, and they provide moving and cleaning services.

Green Living Activity Report: The Last Hurrah of 2018 -- A Forest Cleanup Party at the Bukit Gasing Educational Forest

Green Living Activity Report: The Last Hurrah of 2018 -- A Forest Cleanup Party at the Bukit Gasing Educational Forest

By Wong Ee Lynn <wongeelynn@yahoo.com>

MNS Selangor Branch’s Green Living SIG organised a forest clean-up or ‘plogging party’ at the Bukit Gasing Forest Reserve on 29 December 2018 and named the event “The Last Hurrah of 2018” as it was likely to be the final community cleanup of the year for most of the participants. The purpose of the event was to get hikers and members of the community to clean up the popular hiking and recreational spot as a way of giving thanks to Mother Nature for all the good things that took place in 2018, and to set good intentions for a more environmentally-responsible 2019.

A whopping 46 volunteers of all ages, races, faiths and persuasions  showed up for the event and invested a lot of time and effort into cleaning up Bukit Gasing. It was a very heartening and encouraging show of civic consciousness and environmental awareness on the part of the volunteers.

Recyclables were separated and the MBPJ truck arrived at the right time to remove all the sacks of rubbish. A potluck picnic was held at the playground after the cleanup session and Lucky Draw prizes were given out to 6 lucky participants.

Special thanks go to Hari Shanmugam and Malathi Chandran for assisting Green Living with the recce and for leading the volunteers safely in and out of the trails, and to Fashilah Ahmad for sourcing and bringing the discarded gunny sacks for the rubbish. For and on behalf of Mother Nature and MNS Selangor, my heartfelt thanks go out to all the volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to give back to Mother Nature.

Activity Report: Earth Day at the MNS UCF

PENCINTA ALAM JUNE 2017
GREEN LIVING SIG ACTIVITY REPORT
EARTH DAY AT THE MNS UCF
By Wong Ee Lynn

The gloomy drizzle that we woke up to on the morning of Earth Day (22nd April 2017) failed to deter close to 40 dedicated volunteers from showing up at the Malaysian Nature Society Urban Community Forest (UCF) to assist in the trail and nursery cleanup organised by Green Living SIG.

Volunteers consisting of MNS members, members of the public, members of expat community InterNations and staff of biodegradable medical examination glove manufacturer Cranberry (M) Sdn Bhd worked together to clean up the UCF / Federal Hill trail and nursery, the UCF stream and the areas surrounding the MNS headquarters’ entrance. This completed, they also mulched the UCF compost pile and weeded the nursery and vegetable patch.

A refreshment break was provided once these tasks have been completed, and each volunteer was given a reusable cloth tote bag as a token of appreciation. The generous volunteers also brought electronic waste for recycling and pre-loved clothes, toys and books for Green Living’s ongoing projects with other organisations assisting the homeless and urban poor communities in Kuala Lumpur. Several kind volunteers also helped to sort through and pack the donations for easy transportation, while others contributed refreshments.

A Photo Scavenger Hunt was held to end the event on a high note. Volunteers were given a list of items to look for and photograph, including something that propagates through spores, an edible plant, something that has no use in nature (clue: it’s manmade!), and a ‘wefie’ with another volunteer that they have not met prior to this event.

Prizes were given out to the winners and volunteers were duly thanked for their contributions. Green Living would like to thank all the volunteers who participated and we hope to see you at future events.
